Job Responsibilities

Provides spiritual care to patients in a caring, safe and efficient manner in accordance with the individual's plan of care.

  1. Completes an assessment of the patient's and family's spiritual needs at the time of admission and throughout course of care.

  2. Coordinates with the patient/family and interdisciplinary team to establish, review and revise the plan of care for each patient.

  3. Provides individual spiritual care for patients and family members as requested by the patient and family, consistent with the patient's and family's beliefs and according to the plan of care.

  4. Evaluates need for additional services.

  5. Uses personalized sacramental ministry at the request of the patient or family.

  6. Coordinates care with patient's community clergy as requested by the patient or family.

  7. Trains and equips hospice interdisciplinary team members to provide spiritual care for patients and families.

  8. Completes documentation according to Society policies and procedures, assuring accuracy, completeness, timeliness and compliance with regulations.

  9. Provides spiritual care to staff as requested and refers to appropriate resources.

  10. Standing member of and participates in The GSS Way committee.

  11. Helps ensure development of and participates in spiritual life and programming.

  12. Invites and encourages staff to participate in spiritual life of the agency.

  13. Follows and uses standard precautions regarding infection control.

  14. Follows proper hand washing procedures and Personal Protective Equipment use.

  15. Respects patient rights, including patient confidentiality.

  16. Participates in the Quality Assessment Performance Improvement program (QAPI), as requested.

  17. Assists with customer experience/marketing activities to expand community outreach.


  • Graduate of an accredited School of Theology with the Association of Theological Schools (seminary or equivalent) with a Master of Divinity.

  • Permission required from Vice President of Mission Integration if this qualification is not met.

  • Must be an active member in good standing of a Christian denomination per "A Description of Being Christian in the Lutheran Tradition."

  • Must provide written verification of ordination, licensed or commissioned status prior to being hired.

  • Completion of two units of Clinical Pastoral Education or being certified or credentialed as a chaplain, along with being endorsed or affirmed for this ministry by denomination is preferred.

  • Previous and extensive pastoral experience preferred.

  • Training in hospice or grief preferred.

  • Must have a favorable motor vehicle record (MVR) and must present a valid driver's license and proof of insurance before operating a vehicle.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Demonstrated ability to be present with those who are suffering.

  • Ecumenical outlook.

  • Must be able to work independently and cooperatively with others.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills.

  • Skill and compassion when communicating with patients and family members.

  • General computer skills.

  • Knowledge of and belief in hospice concept of care.

  • Knowledge of and respect for major belief systems, both Christian and non-Christian
